Technical Sergeant (Ret.) Wilburn J. "Bill" Sheets, 78, of Villa Ridge, MO, passed away on June 17, 2023. Bill, son of Wilburn H. Sheets and Bonnie Sheets, was born on August 20, 1944 in Fairfax, MO. On June 30, 1972, he was united in marriage to Judi Swiercz in Brindisi, Italy. Bill served his country honorably as a member of the United States Air Force, from which he retired.
In his post-retirement years, Bill dedicated himself to serving his community as a school bus driver for the Knob Noster School District in Missouri and the Coffee County School District in Tullahoma, Tennessee. His warm smile and caring nature made a positive impact on the lives of countless students, ensuring their safe journeys to and from school. Bill's commitment to shaping young lives extended beyond the bus routes. He selflessly volunteered as a Scoutmaster at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, providing guidance and mentorship to the scouts under his care. He was also an avid NASCAR fan, cheering on Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jr., and almost anyone else driving a Chevrolet. And throughout his years, he was a voracious reader following endless adventures within the pages of his books.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn and Bonnie Sheets and two sisters, Mary Lou Schrum and Carolyn Stogdill.
Among his survivors are his wife Judi Sheets of Villa Ridge; two children, Colonel John Sheets and wife Maria of Yorktown, VA and Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Susan Sheets of Sutherland, VA; two sisters, Ethel Black of Fort Smith, AR and Frances Stubblefield of Spiro, OK; two grandchildren, Noah Sheets of Clinton, MS and Peyton Sheets of Yorktown, VA; other loved ones and many friends.
A visitation will be held on Monday, June 26, 2023 from 9-11 a.m. at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home in Washington, MO, with a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Interment, with full military honors will be held at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
