Shirley Neier Obituary

Shirley Mae Neier, 88, passed away on August 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born on March 10, 1936, in Washington, MO, to William and Edna Epple.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank Neier, brother William Epple, sister Doris Cartwright, sister-in-laws Jean, Sallie, and Marylou Epple, and niece Connie Zimmer.  She is survived by brothers Dale and Tom Epple; daughter Wendy (Jim) Morton, daughter Lee Ann Garbs, daughter Lori Schaumburg, daughter Deborah (Tom) Thomas, and daughter Bobbie (Bill) Noelker; step-children Pepper (Duane) Reed, and Adam (Cathy) Neier; grandchildren Krista (Silas) Goldman, Jarid (Jennifer) Clark, Ashley Morton, James (Brittany) Morton, Alecia Garbs, Meagan Garbs, Ian Tindal, Kyle Tindal, Will (Kia) Tindal, Emma (Joey) Corley, Jack Noelker, Martha Noelker, Drew (Grace) Noelker, Cayman (Casey) Reed, Caleb (Madeline) Reed, and Carli Reed, Megan and David Neier; great grandchildren Misha, Leo, and Isaac Goldman; Masin, Boston, Jensen, and Hudson Clark; London and Beckham Rojas; Malachi Muschkat; Owen, Nora, and Hayes Corley; Quinn, Dakota, Ruth, and Rose Reed; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Shirley graduated from Washington High School in 1954.  She was an excellent student and was actively involved in pep club, choir, volleyball, and the yearbook.  She was an extremely hard worker, and her attention to detail was second to none as evidenced not only in her career as a hair stylist but in her many years as an administrative assistant for Chester B. Franz and Hochschild, Bloom and Dardick.

Retirement provided an opportunity for Shirley to embrace her passion for gardening and fishing.  The grandchildren, especially, enjoyed learning to fish with “Grandma and Grandpa.”  Numerous fish fries were held from the many fish, mainly crappie, that Shirley and Frank caught at Mark Twain Lake.  As a member of the Elks, she enjoyed helping with the chicken and fish dinners as well as assisting in the making of Christmas gift baskets. Shirley was also competitive as evidenced in her many games of shuffleboard with “the girls”.  She also enjoyed Pinochle, reading, and quilting.  No doubt, our great Lord will welcome her with open arms, expecting her to be ready to fish and play shuffleboard with those who are waiting for her to arrive.

Visitation will be held at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home in Washington, MO, on Tuesday, August 27, from 9 to 10:30 am, with a funeral mass to follow at 11 am at St. Gertrude’s Parish in Krakow, MO.  Memorial donations can be made to the Pat Ruegg Scholarship Fund/Tuition Assistance.
