Robert J. Himmelberg, 87, of Washington, passed away on May 24, 2024, with his loving wife, Donna, of nearly 60 years at his side. Mr. Himmelberg, son of the late Raymond Himmelberg and Elizabeth nee Trentmann, was born in Washington on September 14, 1936. He received his education from St. Francis Borgia High School. On October 17, 1964, he was united in marriage to Donna Buhr at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Robert served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army.
Robert was an avid outdoorsman and also loved gardening. He was a former Greater St. Louis Dahlia Society member, where he showed many of his blooms at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens and won numerous awards. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Gertrude’s Church, and Buhrs Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father- and mother-in-law, Frank and Frances Buhr, brother-in-law, Eric Durchholz, and two sisters-in-law, Betty Kampschroeder and Helen Buhr.
Among his survivors are his wife, Donna Himmelberg of Washington; two children, Robert S. Himmelberg of Washington and Jill Ruether and husband David of Washington; sister, Annette Durchholz of Washington; grandchildren, Ben Ruether and wife Becky of Washington, Natalie Moran and husband Spencer of Las Vegas, Tommy Ruether of New York, and John Himmelberg of Columbia, MO; great-grandchildren, Fredrick Ruether, August Moran, and Elke Moran; in-laws, Mary Baucom and husband Bill, Leon Buhr, John Buhr and wife Linda, Kelly Schweissguth and husband Burt, Vicky Dotson and husband Fred of Florida, and brother-in-law Ed Kampschroeder of North Carolina; loved ones and many friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at St. Gertrude’s Church, with full military honors immediately following mass. Memorial donations can be made to St. Gertrude’s Church or the St. Francis Borgia Athletic Association.
