Helen A. Roush Szabo

Helen A. Roush Szabo, 85, of Washington, formerly of Emerson, MO, passed away on May 31, 2026. Mrs. Szabo, daughter of the late Lester Strahl and Lena nee Davis, was born on July 9, 1940, in Wayne County, MO. She received her education from Novelty High School. On September 21, 2012, she was united in marriage to John Szabo in Waterford, MI, where they resided for several years until they moved back to Missouri. 

Helen enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and especially treasured the time she spent with her family. She and John cherished going to the Riverfront and sharing lunch together. She also enjoyed embroidering, attending sporting events, spending time with her grandchildren, thrift shopping, working on puzzles and word searches, watching Jeopardy, and listening to Elvis.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Bob Strahl, Willard Strahl, and Jerry Strahl.

Among her survivors are her husband, John Szabo of Washington; four children, Marie Woods and husband Pat of Wentzville, David Roush and wife Karen of Fayette, MO, Lena Whetstone and husband Joseph of Washington, and Jenny Armstrong and husband Scott of Brookfield, MO; two siblings, Sue Branter of Edina, MO and Doris Greusel and husband Dave of Linn, MO; grandchildren, Rachel Schmidt and husband Andrew, Erin Needham and husband Austin, Mikayla Olivier, Alex Kackley and fiance Olivia Zeitzmann, Jacob Day, Mitchell Day, Peyton Armstrong, and Zane Armstrong; two great-grandchildren, Connor Schmidt and Oliver Schmidt; other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on July 9, 2026, from 10-11 a.m. at the Jubilee Church, 1920 East Fifth Street, Washington, with a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the family of Helen Szabo, c/o John Szabo.
