George Meyer Obituary

George J. Meyer, 90, Washington, passed away Monday, February 3, 2025, in Washington. Mr. Meyer, son of the late George F. and Regina Meyer nee Hackmann, was born October 14, 1934, in St. Louis. He received his education from St. Francis Borgia High School, graduating in 1952. On October 6, 1962, he was united in marriage to Miss Joan Ley at St. John’s Gildehaus Church.

George was employed by McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, retiring from there in 1998. Then he worked part time for the Missourian Publishing Company. His greatest passion in life was farming, where he started at a young age helping his father. He also enjoyed traveling, hunting with his sons, attending his coffee club on weekday mornings, and making homemade wine.  He was also a Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Mr. Meyer served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1957 to 1963. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 1121, Washington Volunteer Fire Company, a member of Firetiques and the St. Francis Borgia Church where he was an usher for many years. He served on the St. Francis Borgia Grade School Board. He volunteered at numerous organizations including Meals on Wheels.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth Heying and her husband Don; two brothers-in-law, Roy Vomund and Jerry Eigner, and sister-in-law, Mildred Ley.

Among his survivors are his wife, Joan Meyer of Washington; five children, George R. Meyer and wife Dana of Washington, Jon Meyer and wife Peggy of Washington, Nanci Simmons and husband Dr. John Simmons of Washington, Greg Meyer and wife Katie of Washington, and Gina Threlkeld and husband Dr. Kevin Threlkeld of Wildwood; two sisters, Mary Vomund of Ventura, Calif. and Dolores Meyer of Shrewsbury, Mo.; twelve grandchildren, George W. Meyer, Ben Meyer, Max Meyer, Jon “Jake” Meyer and wife Julianna, Alex Meyer and wife Rachel, Tyler Meyer and wife Kimberly, Reagan Simmons and wife Riann, Madison Simmons, Noah Simmons, Kelsey Reprogle and husband Andrew, Alli Meyer and Eric Meyer; great-grandchildren, Oliver and Derald Meyer, Ida Meyer, Luke Meyer, and Cash and Cooper Reprogle; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Ley and wife Carol, Marvin Ley and wife Carolyn, Raymond Ley and wife Brenda, Rita Ley, and Joseph Ley Jr.; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, February 7, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Borgia Church. A graveside service will include full military honors as well as a bell ringing service by the Washington Volunteer Fire Company followed by interment in the St. Francis Borgia cemetery.  A memorial gathering and luncheon will be held at the lower level of the Knights of Columbus Hall in Washington.  Memorial donations can be made to the St. Francis Borgia Church or the Washington Volunteer Fire Company.
