Obituary

Gary L. Johnson, 76, of Villa Ridge, passed away on September 2, 2023. Gary, son of the late Wallace Johnson and Margaret nee Whertwine, was born on August 18, 1947, in Washington. He received his education from Washington High School. Gary also received an associate degree from East Central College, an associate of applied science from St. Louis Community College, and a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College. Mr. Johnson served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army.

On February 18, 1984, he was united in marriage to Barbara Welcher in Dillon, SC. Gary was employed by McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing for over 25 years. He and Barbara were members of Peace Lutheran Church since 1992.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Among his survivors are his wife Barbara Johnson of Villa Ridge; children, Erik Johnson and wife Diana Cortes of Colorado Springs, CO, Daniel Watson of Knoxville, IA, and Kristy Jinks and husband Robert of Villa Ridge; grandchildren, Coree Greene and husband Zachary, Sebastian Cortes, Kody Johnson, Alexis Jinks, Marissa Jinks, Kasey Johnson, and Nolan Jinks; in-laws, Bobby Welcher and Cathy Meyer and husband Bill; other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 10-11 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Washington, with a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation or the Peace Lutheran Church Crisis Fund.
