Daniel Contarini Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel Lawrence Contarini, 71, of Washington, MO, who departed this life on September 29, 2024, Dan was born on May 11, 1953, in St. Louis, MO, to the late Lawrence Contarini and Gladys (Elston) Contarini.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Kim Contarini (Minnich) of Washington, MO, who was his steadfast companion and partner. He leaves behind a cherished family: his daughter, Leslie Contarini, and her husband Manuel Chinellato of Venice, Italy; his daughter, Sarah Barone (Contarini), and her husband, Michael Barone, along with their children, Rocco and Scarlett Barone of St. Louis, MO; his son, Jonathan Contarini, and his fiancée, Lisa Milton of Washington, MO; and his ex-wife and best friend, Cheryl Hamilton of Washington, MO. He also leaves behind an extended family of cousins, first responders, and friends.

Dan’s love for animals was evident throughout his life, and his dogs Maddie, Manford, Max, and Stanley were among his greatest joys. His compassion for others was boundless, and his kindness, generosity, and bravery left an indelible mark on everyone he met. As we mourn his loss, we find comfort in the legacy of love and service he leaves behind.

Dan dedicated his professional life to law enforcement, serving with honor and distinction. He began as a Reserve Police Officer at the Kirkwood Police Department (December 1980 - September 1983) before moving to the Cuba Police Department as a Police Officer (September 1983 - July 1985). His journey continued with the Washington Police Department, where he held multiple roles, including Patrol Officer, K9 Officer, D.A.R.E. Instructor, Patrol Sergeant, and Lieutenant (July 1985 - July 2004). During his service at WPD, he also worked for the Washington Ambulance District as an EMT.

After a brief retirement from WPD, Dan continued his commitment to public safety as a Police Sergeant at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and then as Assistant Chief of Police at the DeSoto Police Department from which he retired a second time. He also worked as a reserve officer for the City of New Haven during this period.

Dan also wanted to give back to the profession he loved so dearly. To do this, he concluded his distinguished career with training as a Police Chaplain with the Meramec Area Chaplaincy Coalition.  He returned to WPD to serve as Reserve Officer and Chaplain in 2016. He was also a Reserve Officer/Chaplain for Rosebud Police Department and Instructor/Chaplain for the Eastern Missouri Police Academy.

During Dan’s second retirement, he also worked for Mercy Washington, as a security officer. He enjoyed working with his Mercy coworkers and contributing to the community as he was able to assist many people at this position.

Dan’s ultimate goal was to be the oldest living police officer in the United States. Unfortunately, in 2021 he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia which led to his final retirement.

Dan was also deeply involved in his community, serving on the Washington School Board for 12 years and as a foster parent, exemplifying his dedication to helping others.

His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate to know him. Officer Dan will be profoundly missed, but his spirit of generosity, courage, and love will live on in the hearts of those he impacted.
