Cyril Albers Obituary

Cyril Vincent "Papa" Albers passed away on June 17th, 2021, peacefully at his home in Washington, Missouri surrounded in love with his family by his side.

Cy was born on July 23rd, 1933, to Virgil and Emelia (nee Winter) Albers of Germantown, Illinois.  As his family likes to say, God broke the mold that day.  Cy's formative years were spent developing a love for life on the farm, establishing a lifelong sense of frugality, and working hard to support his family.  All traits he carried with him throughout his life.

Cy met the love of his life, Lucille "Lou" Schoendienst, at Aviston High School.  He was taken with her from the very start.  Cy and Lou married on September 6th, 1954.  They blissfully welcomed four healthy children soon after.  Eventually, they moved to Washington, Missouri to raise their family, a community that still holds an immensely special place in their family's hearts.  All four of their children – and two grandchildren – attended Saint Francis Borgia Regional High School.  Cy loved to cheer on Borgia from the sidelines, particularly in sports his children and grandchildren played like basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, and football.  So much so, he eagerly volunteered to the run the score clock for Borgia's basketball team for 31 seasons.  He was even awarded Borgia's Ralph Lause #1 Fan Memorial Award.

Cy was stubborn yet doting, a rare combination that can't be replicated.  He was an Army veteran.  He loved to golf, especially with his group of golfing buddies that often included his wife, Lou.  He loved to fish.  He loved to cheer on his St. Louis Cardinals.  He was steadfast in his faith and loved to usher at Our of Lady of Lourdes.  He loved his Manhattans with no bitters and extra cherry juice.  But most of all, he loved to spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He will be sorely missed.

Cy is survived by his loving wife of nearly 67 years, Lou; their four children:  son, Carl (Jana) Albers of Berger, Missouri; daughters Linda (Reggie) Wright-Cook of Edmond, Oklahoma, Bev (Bill) Fritz of Creve Coeur, Missouri, and Amy (Tim) Laczkowski of Dallas, Texas; and his two brothers, Leon (Ruth) Albers of Breese, Illinois and Don (Claudia) Albers of Germantown, Illinois.   He is missed dearly by his ten grandchildren:  Diana (Andrew), JC, Mindy (Destin), Abby (Peter), Chloe (Tim), Justin, Clara, Andrew, Tate, and Luke; three great-grandchildren:  Ethan, Kathryn, and Kollins; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Ann; his parents; and his three brothers, Jerome "Muscles" (Emmy) Albers, James Albers, and David Albers.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 26th, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes in Washington, Missouri.  A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m., with a subsequent private burial.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Cy's name to St. Francis Borgia's Athletic Association-Attention Advancement Dept., 1000 Borgia Dr., Washington, MO 63090 or the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1014 Madison Ave., Washington, MO 63090.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
