Cherie Marie Sands, 68, of New Haven, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2026, surround by her family. Cherie, daughter of Helen (Steffens) Sands and the late Donald Sands, was born on August 27, 1957, in Washington, Missouri. She received her education from Washington High School.
Cherie had many adventures in her life from civil war reenactment to traveling and being part of western movie sets. In her younger years, she had a recycling business and from there became passionate about recycling. Cherie was also a huge fan of the rodeo scene and would retell many of the stories all the cowboys would tell her. She had a strong religious faith, loved collecting arrowheads, fishing, gardening, and riding motorcycles. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her beautiful brown eyes would always shine along with a happy smile every time you mentioned her son or granddaughter’s name. She cared deeply about her family and friends, whose presence brought immeasurable happiness to her life.
She is preceded in death by her father, Donald Sands; and paternal grandparents, Lawrence & Alice (Minzes) Sands as well as her maternal grandparents, August & Evelyn (Kleekamp) Steffens.
She is survived by her son, Jason Mauntel and wife, Brande of New Haven; granddaughter, Kyra Mauntel of New Haven; mother, Helen (Steffens) Sands of Labadie; sister, Joyce (Sands) Schnarr and husband, Danny of Stanton; nephews, nieces, many other relatives, and friends.
A service will be held at Bethel Cemetery in Labadie, Missouri on March 2, 2026, with services beginning at 2:00 pm.
