Charles “Michael” Heidmann, 77, born in Washington, Missouri on January 28, 1947, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 14, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri.
Michael was a 1965 graduate of Washington High School. He then attended Missouri S&T and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He married Barbara Smith on November 19, 1983.
In his healthy years, he had a passion for the outdoors. His weekends were spent with his family, outside tending to gardens, working on his next project around the house, or with a fishing pole in his hand. He taught himself many trades. He could be relied on as a plumber, a carpenter, or an electrician, and could build anything you asked him to build. He built decks, finished basements, moved laundry rooms, refinished rooms from floor to ceiling, did beautiful woodworking, and was always busy. He enjoyed hunting with his in-laws, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. In his younger years, he was skilled on the water, whether it be steering boats or canoes, he knew all of the secrets to perfect navigation. In his later years, he found his adventures through reading, watching westerns, and playing checkers with his grandkids. What Michael cherished most was spending time with his beloved wife, Barbara, and his proudest achievements were his children and grandchildren.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Lucille Heidmann; his brother Steve Heidmann; his parents-in-law, John “Jake” and Leona Smith; sister-in-law Mary Katherine Quade; and brother-in-law Joel “Jay” Smith.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, three children, Chantell Unnerstall and husband Kenneth of Washington, Tyson Heidmann and wife Elizabeth of Florissant, Danielle Unnerstall and husband Spencer of Washington; grandchildren, Sydney McDermott and husband Ryan, Zach Unnerstall, Audrey Heidmann, Emily Heidmann, Charles Unnerstall, and Augustus Unnerstall; siblings, Mark Heidmann of Washington, Scott Heidmann and husband Ken Petti of Kansas City, Missouri; sibilings-in-law, Mindy Heidmann, Dan Smith and wife Joy of Raymore, Missouri, Donna Sellars of Rich Hill, Missouri, Dwayne Smith and wife Suzanne of Nevada, Missouri and Sammi Smith of Nevada, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and close friends.
To honor Michael’s wishes, the family will have a private celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Borgia High School or the American Heart Association.
Rest in peace, Michael, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
