August W. “Gus” Emmer Jr., 75 , of Washington, passed away on September 6, 2022. Gus, son of the late August Emmer Sr. and Verona nee Caldwell, was born on December 14, 1946 in St. Louis. He received his education from Triad High School in St. Jacob, IL and from SIUE. On September 3, 1971, he was united in marriage to Judy Mateer in Edwardsville, IL.
Mr. Emmer served his country honorably as a member of the United States Navy.
Gus had a beautiful voice. He loved to sing and play guitar. Motorcycle trips with the In-laws, traveling the country in the RV, and family cookouts were his great pleasures.
Gus loved and appreciated all his friends of Bill W. and attributed his good life to the fellowship and study of the 12 steps.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Cleve Mateer; sister, Margaret Ann Sweeney; sister-in-law, Jane Lane and one grandchild, Solee Emmer.
Among his survivors are his wife, Judy Emmer of Washington; four children, Michael McGee of Nashville, TN, Jennifer Hall and husband David Winholt of St. Clair, Minda Reames of Union, and Ryan Emmer of Union; mother-in-law, Fern Mateer of Glen Carbon, IL; siblings, Jodi Emmer-Lovell and husband Richard of Burton, OH and Melissa Snelson and husband Jim of Granite City, IL; six grandchildren, Josie, Layla, Miles, Liam, Adyn, and Hazel; two brother-in-laws, James and Michael Mateer; nieces, Melanie Sweeney and Elisa Ayers; other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2022, from 4-8 p.m. at Nieburg-Vitt, Miller Funeral Home. Funeral service will be private. Memorial donations can be made to Mercy Hospice or the Hope Ranch in Sullivan.
