Etta Mae “Boots” Bonney (nee Schurr), 90, of Washington, passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018. Boots was born on October 27, 1927, in St. Louis to the late August and Flora (nee Eskridge) Schurr and grew up in the Maplewood area. She came by her nickname, Boots, early in her childhood because one of she and her cousins and neighborhood children played ‘hide the boot’ with her old baby boots. She married the late Samuel C. Bonney, MD on February 15, 1947, in St. Louis and she worked for Missouri Governor Phil Donnelly to support she and Sam while he attended medical school. They moved to Washington in 1959 and she helped him establish his family practice. She was a devoted mother to her two sons, and after they were older, she pursued an associate degree in art from East Central College. The classes she took fostered an interest in welded sculpture, and she was proud of the sculptures and art that she continued to create through her life. After Sam retired, the two of them loved to travel all over the world together and with their sons’ families.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at the Presbyterian Church of Washington. Interment will follow at the Church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 23, from 3 until 7 pm at Miller Funeral Home. Memorial donations are appreciated to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Boots is survived by two sons, Dave and wife Toni Bonney of Weldon Springs, Missouri and Ed and wife Beth Bonney of Labadie; four grandchildren, Kristen, Nicole, Samantha, and Eric; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
