David J. Voelkerding, 74, of Dutzow, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. David was born on September 10, 1944, in Washington to the late Victor and Elizabeth (nee Kreienbaum) Voelkerding. He was united in marriage to Diane Holtmeyer at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on August 30, 1969, where they were longtime parishioners. David was an avid reader of American history and extremely knowledgeable about the Civil War, westward expansion, and the great American West. He enjoyed his 32-year career as a commercial airline pilot, first with Ozark airlines and later with Trans World Airlines, and equally enjoyed the peace and relaxation of fly fishing in the streams and creeks of Missouri. Most of all, David loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 10 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Church cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 15, from 4 until 8 pm, with a Rosary Service at 7:30 pm at Miller Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are appreciated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, or Ronald McDonald House.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Voelkerding; three children, Eric Voelkerding and wife Susan of Washington, Theresa Fitzpatrick and husband Mike of Dutzow, and Brian Voelkerding and wife Lindsey of St. Charles; two siblings, Karen Marquart and husband Bill of Dutzow and Yvonne Maune and husband Steve of Augusta; five grandchildren, Danielle, Megan, Nicole, Stephanie, and Tyler; other relatives and many friends.
